Security Penetration Testing
Penetration testing is an annual event so is routine. Any vulnerabilities discovered are documented and then mitigated.
The external facing network and web servers must be penetration tested annually in line with threat and vulnerability assessments and security policies to ensure that risk of hacking and unauthorised disclosures are minimised. Westgate IT located suitably skilled penetration testing consultants, obtained agreement from the organisation that the costings were acceptable and arranged for them to do the testing work. Following testing a report was prepared and then submitted to them with recommendations for reducing risks.
The project was completed satisfactorily on time and budget and achieved its aim of minimising the risk of the organisations network security being compromised.

BYOD and Mobility
The client, a high profile financial under writer, required a solution to make their workforce more mobile and include the addition of personal devices carrying organisational email. The requirements were to provide a highly secure wireless environment with 3 separate networks providing varying levels of access based upon organisation membership.
With the use of an Aruba Mobility solution we were able to deploy full wireless coverage of an old 3 story Victorian building and encompass a security level high enough for the client’s purposes. The network separation was performed by the 3200XM controller using an in built firewall allowing session based role control.
Active directory integration was achieved by using NPS to perform RADIUS authentication against each machine and user connecting to the network. Based upon the users Active Directory group the controller assigns a role which then has access restrictions and a VLAN associated with it.
The client now has the ability to allow its staff to use their personal mobile devices without risk to data integrity as well as provide a professional level of guest access to visiting clients. The client also has the ability to securely connect corporate devices to the wireless without risk of being attacked from external sources or the ability for the users to interact from other internal devices.

VMware Vsphere Cluster Implementation
The challenge was to put together a virtual cluster with the space and performance needed by the client. While they already had a virtual cluster, it was running out of headroom with the organisations increasing number of users. They also wanted an improved backup and disaster recovery solutions with decreased restore and recovery times.
With a number of services provided to their users both internal and external, they needed this project done quickly and efficiently with a minimum of disruption and downtime.
A VMware vSphere cluster of three virtual hosts (one backup) using ESXi was specified to provide the required performance while being able to withstand failures in any single component or system. With VMware’s HA, even if a host does fail, virtual machines will be started on the other hosts ensuring even failures during the early hours of the morning are resolved quickly.
Having been in place for a few months, the client have enjoyed increased performance, redundancy and now have real offsite disaster recovery solution. Most importantly it’s allowed them to focus on their core business without having to worry about IT getting in the way. The system is considered a success and has paved the way for possible additional virtual projects like VDI desktops.

Email Migration to the Cloud
Migrate an existing in-house Exchange infrastructure to a Cloud based solution giving the client zero downtime during the entire process. This project also included configuring end user PC’s, tablets and smart phones to communicate with the new Exchange system.
Migrating the data was always going to be the most drawn out phase of the project. For this, we allowed ample time to begin the initial data synchronisation between their old in-house Exchange and their new Cloud based Exchange. Once the main bulk of data had been synchronized, one last small synchronisation was performed before we switched over their DNS settings to start email flowing to their new Cloud environment. The tools available to Westgate allowed the entire synchronisation phase to operate without interrupting performance or availability to the client during working hours.
The last step involved an engineer visit on-site with the client. As already agreed in the proposal, the engineer visit was arranged during non-working hours as to not interrupt the staff during the working day. In case of any unforeseen incidents, Westgate had booked the engineer to be on-site for the next couple of days. As predicted, everything went smoothly and all devices including PC’s, laptops, smart phones and tablets were all configured to communicate with the new infrastructure in the first day. When the staff returned a few days later, they were able to continue with their daily routine without any interruption.
The project was a success, providing the client with zero downtime, and successfully migrating their entire Exchange environment within the agreed time frame. The client is now benefiting from their new Cloud infrastructure, giving them reduced overhead costs as well as unmatched availability.
